Brazilian Bikini Waxing

Brazilian bikini waxing is the ultimate in hair removal. While this method requires tolerance to momentary discomfort, the result of this procedure is just as sexy as anything else that’s come from Brazil. For those who are not familiar, waxing is a process of hair removal that uses a warm wax and thin strips of muslin fabric to remove hair from the root. This method generally lasts 2 – 6 weeks, so it cuts down on any of the potential irritation caused by constant shaving.

There are different types of bikini waxes available with the Brazilian, sometimes called the Sphinx or Hollywood, being the barest of them all.  This procedure removes all hair from the front pubic area to the buttocks and all parts in between.  If requested, the wax technician will leave a thin strip of hair in the front called a “landing strip” or other specific design if you want something a little more fun.  Here, we’ll take a look at everything you need to know about Brazilian bikini waxing from A to Z.

What to Know Before You Go
Before you make an appointment for your a Brazilian wax, be sure to do some research on the spa facility to make sure you like the space and its staff.  Ask for a tour, find customer reviews, and be willing to ask questions or see what your friends recommend. There should be private rooms, clean counters, fresh paper sheets and bare floors. A good bikini waxing starts with a clean location and knowledgeable experts, so make sure you’re comfortable with whatever place you choose.

All waxing procedures require a certain amount of hair length to be grown to ensure a quick, clean result. When you make an appointment, many spas will ask for an estimate of your hair length. Usually a quarter inch (¼”) of growth is optimal, but for coarser hair a half inch (½”) may be needed. If it’s too short, you’ll be asked to reschedule so be sure to plan accordingly if you have any beach trips coming up.

Procedure

On the day of your appointment, make sure you shower beforehand as a clean skin surface makes for easier waxing. The procedure will take place in a private room where you’ll be given the opportunity to undress from the waist down. The wax technician should also provide you with a paper thong to wear.  As the procedure progresses, the thong will be repositioned depending on the area they are working in so that you’re never entirely exposed at any given time.  Each spa patron should also have an individual pot of wax for each session to avoid contamination so make sure there’s a fresh pot of wax being warmed when you arrive.

Once the wax is warmed to a syrup-like consistency, the wax technician will put on latex gloves and apply a thin amount to a small area of skin using a wooden spatula that looks like a big popsicle stick or tongue depressor. Then a strip of muslin fabric is firmly pressed down onto the wax to ensure the strip adheres to the wax and the wax adheres to your hair. While pulling the skin taut, the technician will quickly pull the strip in the opposite direction of hair growth, keeping her hand as close to the skin as possible while doing so. This ensures that the hair is pulled out in the most effective and efficient manner.

Working one small area at a time, this process is repeated until the desired area of hair is removed. Depending on the amount of hair you have, you may be asked to raise your legs or get on all fours so that the technician can easily access the regions that need waxing. After the waxing is completed, the technician will examine the area to check for any errant hairs. Any stragglers will be removed with sanitized tweezers. After that, a soothing lotion or finishing oil will be applied to calm any irritation or redness.

Results
Immediately after a Brazilian bikini waxing, your skin will be red and a bit swollen. This is normal and should subside by the end of the day. While the process is uncomfortable and a bit embarrassing, it only takes about 15 – 30 minutes to complete with results that last up to 6 weeks at a time.

Cost
Pricing for the Brazilian wax varies from city to city. Obviously procedures done in New York City will be higher than those done in Portland, OR. On average, however, the price range of Brazilian bikini waxing is about $60 – $80 without tip. Again, it depends on the city and the particular spa you’re visiting.  Don’t be afraid to compare prices, but keep in mind this may be one sensitive area where you don’t want to skimp.

Tips and Suggestions
For the best waxing experience, there are certain things you can do before, during and after.

  1. Again, clean dry skin is the optimal surface for any type of wax procedure.
  2. If you happen to be menstruating, for obvious reasons, it is advisable to reschedule. Plus, the bikini area tends to be more sensitive during that time of the month and waxing could be more painful than necessary.
  3. The temperature of the wax shouldn’t be too hot – it should not burn you. If it looks too runny while being stirred, ask for a small amount to be tested on the inside of your wrist. The wax should be warm, not hot.
  4. Tell the technician if you are using any dermatological treatments or products with glycolic acid in them as they can affect how your skin reacts during waxing.
  5. Make sure you’re comfortable with the room temperature. If it’s too warm and you start to perspire, it could make removal more difficult. If it’s too cold, your pores could shrink up and make the removal process more painful.
  6. Avoid hot showers or baths after waxing as your skin will be more sensitive in this region for the first 24 hours or so.
  7. Ingrown hairs are a common occurrence after waxing. To avoid them, gently exfoliate with a loofah or washcloth while showering (after 24 hours, of course!).

Alternatives

Brazilian Bikini Waxing

While going to a spa is highly recommended, especially for your first Brazilian bikini waxing experience, there are at-home kits that can be used, as well.  Given the thorough nature of a Brazilian wax, you will likely find it necessary to ask for assistance from a friend.  This could work to both of your advantages if you help each other out!  All of the steps at a spa covered earlier in this article should be closely followed at home.  If it’s your first time, consider practicing on your arm or other area with a little hair before you move to your delicate bikini region.  If you have particularly sensitive skin, wait 24 hours after waxing the rest area to see how your skin reacts.

Whether you’re waxing at home or going to a spa, if going completely bare isn’t your cup of tea, consider one of these alternatives to the Brazilian.  A regular bikini wax removes any hair that’s outside the panty line and is a good option if you just want to clean up or if it’s your first time waxing. A full bikini wax takes the regular bikini wax a bit further. In addition to removing hair from the sides, hair is also removed from the top of the bikini area to create a triangle-shaped area. A French bikini wax removes all the hair at the front and between the thighs but doesn’t take the hair off from the back.

Regardless of which style you choose, or whether you visit the spa or tackle it at home with a friend, a Brazilian bikini wax will leave you feeling smooth and confident in even the most revealing swimsuits.
